Following up in a distant second place was “How To Train Your Dragon” (Paramount), which earned $10.82 million, bringing its total gross to date to nearly $200 million.
In third place was “Date Night” (Fox) with $7.6, while the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy “The Back-Up Plan” (CBS) earned $7.2 million.
The poorly reviewed family comedy “Furry Vengeance” (Summit) earned $6.5 million in its opening weekend.
The re-booted “Nightmare” franchise stars Oscar-nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley as the new Freddy Krueger. Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, said in an email that Haley “proved that he was able to fill the rather large shoes of Robert Englund who for years put his indelible stamp on this iconic and classic horror character.”
