Movie Review: Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa

Film: Vinnaithaandi VaruvaayaaCast: Silambarasan, Trisha Krishna and Ganesh
Direction: Gautham Vasudev Menon
Rating: ** The single most depressing bane of Indian cinema is its inability to pursue excellence, and this cuts across language and region. Scripts are shoddily produced. Often, situations are lifted and used with modifications. Gautham Vasudev Menon's Tamil work, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, is guilty of these.
Ideas from Dustin Hoffman-starrer The Graduate, Mani Ratnam Alaipaayuthe and some other screen romances find echo in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. Obviously, the feel seems so cliched.
What is even more unfortunate is the movie's reaffirmation of prejudices: the man has got to be older than the girl if they are to marry, they must belong to the same religion and family verdict is supreme however hard and illogical it may be. Menon, who wrote the script, may have been influenced by pockets of such bigotry, but modern India, especially its young working class generation, is not really bonded to these kinds of narrow views.
Menon's love story begins with a Hindu boy chasing a seemingly reluctant Christian girl, whose trepidation primarily arises from the fact they belong to different faiths, and her father's no-no to their union. Despite the deep feeling she begins to nurse for him, she refuses to cross societal barricades.
Neither A.R. Rahman's music nor the performances contribute significantly to the movie. Lyrics are no longer written by poets as they once were, and the tendency to allow instruments to dominate voice, drowning it in the process, turns melody into noise. Add to this, the bizarre song picturisations with the characters flitting from one exotic location to another or emerging out of groups of sheer alien looking men and women. Sometimes, they are pale skinned, sometimes black! I fail to understand how these help carry forward the narrative; rather they cut the flow and roughen the motion and movement.
Finally, Silambarasan as Karthik wooing Jessie (Trisha Krishnan) appears in a new form, the romantic hero. But he is awfully wooden and seems terribly ill at ease, failing to evoke the passionate chemistry with Jessie that the movie sets out to capture in the first place. Krishnan is average, and does sparkle a few times, but Ganesh (as cameraman Ganesh) is delightful as the friend of the lovers, reflecting the pain and pathos of Karthik and Jessie. Some peppy one-liners cheer us up, but these alone cannot engage us through the entire run.
For all the hype a Gautham Vasudev Menon's work generates, his latest effort fails to cross the skies.

FILMFARE Awards 2009-Other Stories

Hrithik Roshan makes an entry into the 55th Idea Filmfare Awards 2009 with a kite. The hosts:

Actress Minissha Lamba tweeted on co-hosts Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan, “Show just started. SRK wearing red glasses that I love on him soooo much. Saif looking so dapper.. Mistook him for an Italian backstage!!”

When Atul Kulkarni went up the stage to present a technical award, SRK pulled his leg saying, “Atul ek smile toh kardo. Itne paise mein itna he milega kya?”. To this Atul smiled and wished a “Hi” to both SRK and Saif.

While hosting, SRK and Saif called Deepika Padukone on stage for an act and while at that, their pants just came off giving full view of their boxer shorts, making it a real funny act at that!

Karan Johar and Siddharth are hosting the show now and SRK introduced K Jo as sexy and gorgeous. To that Karan replied, “With a beautiful ladies like Gauri and Kareena, I am sure SRK and Saif are not getting time to look at other girls and so they are noticing me.’

SRK, Saif salute Sachin
Hosts Shah Rukh and Saif saluted Sachin Tendulkar for his amazing 200 score at the Gauhati ODI against South Africa.

Shruti Haasan and Siddharth takes over from SRK-Saif to host the next set of awards.

Saif turns a chicken!
Saif is back after a costume change. Wearing a white feather outfit, Saif is looking cute, somewhat like a chicken. Next gag is going to be interesting...
In a gag, Saif had an egg hatched on his head. When he and Shah Rukh went to meet Rekha, she reached to hug Saif and he said, “Baby I have this egg on my head.” To this Rekha seductively replied, “Anything for you baby.”

SRK goes Blue!
SRK became a shark from ‘BLUE’ while Saif became masakalli from ‘Delhi-6’ for a skit.

When Bipasha Basu came up to present an award, SRK asked her to do some aerobics and to everyone’s surprise she did do some of the fitness acts with SRK and Saif trying hard to cope up with her.

Saif fills in for Bebo
SRK announced that “here’s presenting Kareena.” Instead of Kareena, beau Saif Ali Khan played the lovely actress by doing a little jig on the song ‘San Sana San’ from the movie Asoka.

The Buzz off-stage...
Jonty Rhodes sitting backstage between two hot Marathi girls - Mugdha Godse and Urmila Matondkar, who were wearing beautiful saris. The two ladies were trying to get very friendly with the South African cricketer while Jonty was blushing non-stop.

Kajol and Urmila are bonding like a house on fire.

Kunal Kapoor should be given an award for the most active member at the Filmfare. He is doing whatever his friends are telling him to do. Be it going out for a smoke, or on the stage and off stage hanging out, choosing their clothes, giving them company for a drink etc. We wonder where the energy is coming from!

Prateik Babbar and Neil Nitin Mukesh have been constantly together like a magnet since they have entered. We are suspecting a new Dostana well.

Shruti Haasan is wearing a strapless gown and she was shivering with the cold due to the powerful A/C at the Yash Raj studio where the 55th Idea Filmfare Awards happened. She asked for a jacket from a friend to keep her warm.

Sizzling Performances...
Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandez, the Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai pair set the stage on fire, with a rocking performance.

A tribute to MJ...
Karan Johar talks about the ‘King of Pop’...Shahid’s performance follows...

Shahid Moonwalked...
When Shahid Kapoor performed a tribute to Michael Jackson the audience went into a frenzy. Shahid did each and every step of MJ including the trademark moonwalk with great ease. He performed on the songs Jam and Smooth Criminal. Farhan Akhtar and Kunal Kapoor looked quite impressed with Shahid’s act.

Biding adieu...
Filmfare also paid tribute to people who passed away last year. Bina Rai, Shakti Samanta, Feroze Khan, Prakash Mehra, Gulshan Kumar Mehta, Simple Kapadia, Joginder, Leela Naidu, Sujit Kumar, Tahir Hussain and Nirmal Pandey.

Imtiaz Ali who has been nominated in the Best Director category for Love Aaj Kal looked pretty chilled out while walking the red carpet with his parents and wife. He says, “I love being at the Filmfare awards. This is a time where all the friends can meet and party after the awards to celebrate each other’s win”

Imtiaz also walked the ramp at the Manish Malhotra’s show at the Filmfare pre-event party that was held on Thursday night.

Ayan Mukherjee wants Ranbir Kapoor to win the Best Actor award for Wake Up Sid but he knows Amitabh Bachchan will take that one away for Paa.

Shruti Haasan chose to wear beige colour outfit designed by Christion Dior for the event, but she failed to impress. Shruti will also play the host for a while and says, “I am very excited as this is the first time I will be compering for Filmfare.”

AKSHAYA KUMAR-THE DARE DEVIL

Akshay risking health for action
IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, February 09, 2010]
…that’s why we call him Stunt King; no matter how serious the risk is or however fatal it might be… Khiladi Kumar Akshay is always a game for action stunts.
Hardly he had touched the Indian grounds after a trip to Germany, Akki said to have immediately hopped on to the sets of ‘Action Replayy’. What’s in that you ask? Arre, the actor in fact had been in Germany to take on a hydrotherapy course to treat his ailing back. And the day when he landed in the city, Akshay took on the shooting schedule which includes risky action stunts.
Sources found that Akki is currently shooting high-voltage action sequence on bikes with Rannvijay. Everyone in the unit were said to be quite apprehensive about him performing the stunts. However, Akshay not only refused to use a body double but also has been relentlessly pushing himself for the action scenes.
The action scenes involve Akshay doing a chase sequence by jumping from one speeding bike to another.
Action Replayy’s director Vipul Shah however is hovering over the actor like a concerned mom, sources revealed. He is said to be taking special care of Akshay as he does not want any situation where his back injury has even the slightest chance of aggravating further.
Stunts are all fine, but Akshayji thoda dyaan rakhna; after all health ka mammla hai!

BIPASHA BASU'S FITNESS MANTRA

Bipasha Basu came down to Delhi for what was expected to be just another promotional activity by a celeb. It turned out to be anything but that, as accusations of starry tantrums, breach of contract, abusive behaviour, harassment - many of them contradictory - flew around. Bipasha and Shemaroo say that she was being coerced into being part of the hotel chairman’s birthday celebrations. The chairman, Ashok Mittal, predictably denies this. We bring you all sides of the story...

Bipasha’s PR team’s take:

“Initially, Bipasha was supposed to release the DVD in Delhi on February 4 and in Mumbai on February 5, but since John had time on the fourth, they launched the DVD in Mumbai first.

We met Ashok Mittal for the event and he agreed to sponsor the entire launch. He also said that since it’s his birthday on the 5th, he’d like Bipasha to come for his birthday party and cut the cake. We told him that actors charge a fee for such events and that Bipasha too would ask for that. Then he said that he’d sponsor the launch, which would include, besides the rooms, tickets, backdrop, projector, light and sound, ground travel and security. Ashok Mittal said that he can only give his BMW for ground transport and I should arrange for the rest. We gave him an estimated bill of Rs 2.9 lakh for the entire arrangement. He initially gave a cheque for one lakh, but the day the cheque had to be encashed, there was a stop payment order on it.

We called Bobby, who was handling event management for them. He came to meet us, requested that we get the event done smoothly and gave another cheque of Rs 1 lakh. This cheque was cleared, but now, we were a bit apprehensive. We were told that we’d be paid the pending amount as soon as Bipasha reached the hotel.

But when Bipasha came and was through with her press conference, Ashok Mittal asked for her to come and join him in his celebrations. It was around 11.30 and Bipasha had already retired for the day and was fast asleep. Mittal called his hotel security and asked them to surround Bipasha’s room. The bouncers that had been hired for Bipasha’s security from our side, were thrown out of the hotel and the hotel staff misbehaved with them.

Mittal, who was completely sloshed, then started a heated argument with us and used inappropriate language for Bipasha and demanded that Bipasha be called outside. He was accompanied by some goons who brandished guns and they even misbehaved with the senior management from Shemaroo, Bipasha’s partners in the DVD venture.

He then started talking in a filthy language with everyone and said, “Give me Rs 25 lakh right now or call the sl** out.” It was then that the Shemaroo MD took matters in his own hands and paid Mittal Rs 10,40,000 by credit card immediately. However, the Mittals then called the media to her room, alleging that she had asked for Rs 30 lakh and began cooking all sorts of stories about her.

She left the hotel at 5 in the morning, with the media still camped outside her room.”

KitesHrithik Roshan starrer Kites has seen its share of upheavals and the latest one has been created by 3 Idiots director Raju Hirani, as he has refused to edit the Indian version of the film.
A website reported, the film has two versions. The international version, as is common knowledge now, is being edited by Hollywood's Brett Ratner. But Roshan wanted Raju to edit the Indian version as he feels Ratner's sensibilities will make it suitable for an international audience only.
The website stated that 10 days ago, Rakesh reportedly met Raju and asked him if he could do the final edit of Kites. But Hirani who has his hands full with work had to turn down the movie.

Julia RobertsHollywood star Julia Roberts is against making sequel of Pretty Woman because she considers herself too "old" to star in it. The 42-year-old actress, who is best known for her role as prostitute Vivian Ward opposite Richard Gere in the popular 1990 movie, is adamant that she does not want a follow-up, reported Contactmusic.
"Nobody wants to see an old hooker. It's not that I'm anti-romantic comedy, which, for some reason, is always the favoured interpretation," said Roberts.
Besides Pretty Woman, the Oscar-winning actress has also starred in rom-coms like My Best Friends Wedding and Runaway Bride.
"I like being funny, I like being romantic... but it's challenging trying to find a script which is original or interesting," said Roberts.

Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann finds a reflection of Shakespeare's plays in Bollywood films and was so impressed with Indian stars and Hindi movies that he used the song Chamma, Chamma in his musical Moulin Rouge. Now the Oscar-nominated director is keen to work on a film in India and collaborate with music maestro A.R. Rahman.
"There are a number of classic stars here and there are a few new Indian actors as well who are doing things differently. The idea of working with Indian actors has always excited me and if it works out I definitely will. I am keeping my fingers crossed," Luhrmann told IANS in an interview.
This is Luhrmann's fourth trip to India. So did he gather from the trip any fodder for his next project? "I wouldn't say fodder, but every time I come here it has had a direct effect on my life and my work. There are many things I am working on. I have many pieces that could be played in India," he said.
Luhrmann's films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia had a profound presence of "love and spirit". Not many know that the influence has an Indian connect.
"I can't escape my spirit and love - the truth of relationships and the depth, meaning and power of them. Without that I can't be creative. When I don't have one of that, I am nothing.
"When I came here 15 years ago that changed me and every single time I come here, I've had the same experience. It's always the same and very spiritual. At the same time all the other experience I have gathered here whether it is Satyajit Ray or anything, at the heart of it is love. The (Indian) connection is always with me. My relationship with India is continuing," he added.
Luhrmann has been hugely influenced by Bollywood and picked up many things while researching for his opera production A Midsummer Night's Dream here in 1993. Eventually he also set the opera in India.
His 2001 musical Moulin Rouge saw actress Nicole Kidman grooving to popular Bollywood number Chamma chamma from China Gate. "Indian musicals have inspired me since the first time I've been here. I had that cathartic experience 15 years ago when I was here working on Shakespeare and watching a Bollywood movie and it felt the same (like Shakespeare's plays).
"(In Bollywood films) There's tragedy, then comedy and next is music which is just like Shakespeare's works. It reached me as an idea of the old form that was alive in Bollywood and that we brought to ground in Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge."
The 47-year-old was here with Australian portrait painter Vincent Fantauzzo, as part of a Le Sutra and Royal Enfield initiative.
Asked how his overall trip to the country was, he said: "You cannot put it in a nutshell. If you could, it wouldn't be India. And the best thing about being in India is not having plans. But I'll be honest, in the first couple of days it is a bit hot, but then I always find myself secured a lot."
Luhrmann is now working on F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece "The Great Gatsby", which he hasn't confirmed yet.
"Great Gatsby is one project I am working on but I haven't confirmed it yet. I do have the rights to that book but I don't know if I'm doing it (in terms of a film)," he said.

AvatarCanadian director James Cameron said on Wednesday he could be "persuaded" to film a sequel to his record-breaking science-fiction epic Avatar. The futuristic 3-D blockbuster reached yet another milestone on Tuesday, when it smashed the North American box office record previously held by Cameron's Titanic (1997).

"We might be persuaded. We'll have to see how much money the movie makes first," Cameron told CNN when asked about a possible sequel. Money should be of no concern, with Avatar having already racked up over 2.05 billion dollars worldwide, including over 601.1 million in the United States and Canada, overtaking the 600.8 million Titanic earned.

It has also secured nine Oscar nominations, including in the leading categories of best film and best director, as well as several technical achievement categories. In his first interview since his film earned its massive success, Cameron said he was "absolutely" surprised by the records it has broken.

"And that's not some sort of false humility. We thought it was gonna be a commercial movie, but we didn't think it was gonna do half of what it's done financially," he said.

"I see a very similar pattern, in a sense, between Titanic and Avatar. Not that they are similar films because they are not - totally different subjects - but in both cases, you have people coming back over and over to see the film."

Cameron pointed to an "emotional connection" of the public across cultural boundaries with these films. Despite not saying a word about the Oscar nominations, he acknowledged that making Avatar - believed to be the most expensive motion picture ever - was no easy undertaking.

"I had to keep from putting a pistol in my mouth about 20 times during the making of this film," he said ironically.  "That's the nature of an experimental project. It is like the Lewis and Clark expedition (to the US Pacific coast). They can have a general idea where they are going but there is no way you could predict all twists and turns along the way."
